Coaching groups tailored for combat athletes

Join the online coaching groups designed for combat athletes! I program training for three different sport groups: BJJ and submission wrestling, MMA, and striking sports. Each group’s workouts are designed taking into account the specific needs of each sport, in terms of exercise selection, training style, and mobility work, for example. The group is an excellent choice when you want structure and support for your physical training but don’t want to commit to one-on-one coaching.

The BJJ and submission wrestling online coaching group focuses specifically on the qualities required in grappling sports. This includes explosiveness, maximal and general strength, and mobility, without forgetting the static grinding situations common in grappling. Shoulders, the thoracic spine, and the hip area take a beating on the mat, so I provide diverse movement for them to keep you as capable as possible. This group’s workouts support you in training your sport as much as possible while staying as healthy as possible!

MMA is probably one of the most comprehensive combat sports, requiring speed, explosiveness, endurance, strength, and mobility. This online coaching group also takes into account the physical factors affecting strikes and kicks. The group’s workouts load the whole body comprehensively. The aim is to avoid unnecessary injuries in sport-specific training, to the extent that’s possible through strength and conditioning.

The striking sports group emphasizes the qualities required for strikes and kicks. The group’s workouts take speed and explosiveness into account, without forgetting maximal and general strength as well as the mobility required in these sports.

A passionate fan and follower of combat sports

I’m a BJJ black belt and have competed both in Finland and abroad for over 14 years. Before jiu-jitsu I trained MMA and, for several years, Hankumdo. I’ve also tried many other combat sports.

Combining strength training with sport-specific training fascinates me — the benefits of strength training for any sport are undeniable, so why give away an advantage in that area too?

The BJJ and submission wrestling online coaching group focuses on the qualities required in these sports. Exercise selection, training methods, etc. are designed with the sport’s needs in mind. This isn’t a PDF program — I update the groups’ workouts weekly and answer questions through the app.

In one-on-one coaching, everything is tailored to you: weekly training frequency, the amount and methods of strength and aerobic training down to small details, etc. In one-on-one coaching, communication can be more frequent, and monitoring overall load and recovery plays a bigger role. Training in a group is, so to speak, semi-optimized so that the workouts serve as many people as possible.

All groups have two strength and conditioning workouts per week. They’re marked in the training app for Monday and Thursday, but you can do them on whichever days suit you best. So you can pick up the workouts according to your own schedule.

The workouts are gym-based strength and conditioning sessions, so they don’t include aerobic training. In one-on-one coaching, we can consider adding aerobic training alongside sport-specific and strength training.

The mobile app is easy to use. I’ll send you an email invitation with a password that lets you log in to the app. The app has a calendar where you’ll find your workouts. When you start a workout, the app guides you forward. Every exercise has both written instructions I’ve written and a video of that exercise. The app remembers the set weights you use. Even though you train in a group, you’re not in contact with other group members and don’t know who they are. Group members also can’t see each other’s results, since only you and I see them. Messages you send in the app are visible only to me.

How the online coaching groups work remotely

01

Contact

After filling out the form, I’ll respond within 24 hours on weekdays. You’ll receive an invitation to the training app, the coaching start-up briefing, and your first invoice, which has a 14-day payment term. So you can test the workouts free of charge for 14 days.

02

Workouts

You’ll find the workouts in your training app’s calendar. You train independently and are not in contact with other group members. You can, however, always reach out to me about your training.

03

Remote coaching

I design and publish the group’s workouts weekly. The exercises change according to training blocks approximately every eight weeks. You can end the coaching whenever you like, as long as you send me a message about it and pay any outstanding invoice.

Your coach, Tomi Lindholm

Professional coach, certified personal trainer

As a coach, I’ve specialized specifically in strength and conditioning for combat athletes. I closely follow new research and constantly look for better ways to develop combat athletes’ physical fitness alongside their sport-specific training. That’s not easy, because strength and conditioning shouldn’t take energy away from sport-specific training.

In addition to coaching and designing the online coaching group’s workouts, I coach athletes and hobbyists competing in combat sports in one-on-one sessions. Besides strength and conditioning, I teach BJJ and submission wrestling classes in Lahti at Sigma Jiujitsu, where I also coach private lessons in the sport.

Alongside combat sports, I go to the gym regularly to do my own strength and conditioning workouts 2–3 times a week. In addition, I aim for one running session per week. The diversity of sports fascinates me, but it’s also challenging, since managing overall load sets its own boundaries for each of our training.

Load and recovery need to be in balance so a combat athlete stays as capable and healthy as possible. Not all injuries can be avoided given the nature of these sports, but why train too much and too hard when you can train sensibly and develop faster?
